Willumsen meets Selsø – art, nature and music in magical surroundings

Join us for a sensual and creative day where JF Willumsen's view of nature meets the historical charm of Selsø Castle. The beautiful living rooms with views over meadows and fields provide the setting for an art workshop for the whole family with collage, oil pastels and Japanese flower prints, Hapa Zome, under the expert guidance of art mediators Seline Rørbech and Tove Alfastsen from Selsø Castle.

Musicians from Frederikssund Music School provide live music along the way, and the day will end with a discussion about Willumsen's relationship with nature, led by museum director Lisbeth Lund. It will take place on the first floor, where the view is the best.

The event is a collaboration between Willumsens Museum, Frederikssund Music School and Selsø Castle and is supported by Frederikssund Municipality's Culture Fund. ...

In connection with the renovation, @_bara_land_ has prepared a landscape plan for the museum park and the other outdoor areas. The plan, in line with the modernist and composite building architecture, forms the framework for the future arrival of the museum.

JF Willumsen's ravens are impressive works of art, originally created as part of the scenography for the Open-Air Theatre in Ulvedalene in Dyrehaven near Copenhagen. Over time, they have been around a lot, flying here and there, but fortunately have landed safely here in the museum's park. Swipe through the gallery and read more about the Ravens' flying history.

In the summer of 2025, Willumsens Museum will be holding an Art Camp for 9-13 year olds, and this year, an extraordinaire art camp for families with children will be held in Frederikssund due to renovations at the museum. At Elværket, we will set up large tents on the lawn, where we will experiment together with prints, sculpture, linocut printing, color theory, drawing techniques and much more. Even though we cannot be physically at the museum, we will still take the museum's many works as a starting point.

We can guarantee that it will be the coolest camp of the summer – at least it will be the most colorful week of the summer, when we let loose and frolic in the many nooks and crannies of art.

In 2025, while Willumsens Museum is closed for renovation, the exhibition "With groping I begin" at Herregården Odden will be a unique opportunity to experience Willumsen's ceramic works in new and exciting settings. The exhibition is the first in a series where selected works, stories and themes are presented in new stagings at Herregården Odden and exhibits both works from Willumsens Museum and Victor Petersen's Willumsens collection in Mygdal near Hjørring.

In 1890, Willumsen lived with his family for a period in Pont-Aven in Brittany, France. Here he met the French painter, Paul Gauguin - who was married to a Dane - and who, before a trip to Tahiti, had held an auction of his works. During a visit to Willumsen's house, the two artists exchanged works; for Willumsen's own "Type of a Bretagne Woman", he received the beautifully carved Caribbean woman "La Luxure", which Willumsen describes in a letter to Johan Rohde in 1891 as very peculiar.
