Lars von Trier curates
6 June 2026 – 20 September 2026
Willumsens Museum's first special exhibition after its reopening in 2026 is curated by film director Lars von Trier. For the exhibition, Trier has selected works by the visual artists who have meant the most to him. Since his youth, the works have shaped the image bank he has drawn on in his cinematic work. These include Edvard Munch, Vilhelm Hammershøi, August Strindberg, Per Kirkeby, Ejnar Nielsen, Rudolph Tegner, Paul Gauguin, JF Willumsen and Carl Fredrik Hill.
The exhibition is built around Vilhelm Hammershøi's monumental Five portraits (1901), which the 19-year-old Trier went to the Thielska Galleriet in Stockholm in 1975 with the sole purpose of seeing. As Trier himself explains, it exerted an “almost magical attraction” on him. With Hammershøi’s painting as the center, threads are spun to a long list of other works of art, documents, personal objects and films that have had an impact on and inspired Trier over the years.
