Role models or not?

“I saw a TV movie about Munch, and then I became very interested in painting…” (Lars von Trier)

The beginning of a lifelong artistic career can sometimes be formulated in such a simple way. Because the need to be reflected in others is fundamentally human. It is through reflection that we learn to understand ourselves and the world around us. From the first years, when a child reads his parents, to the search for role models in adolescence and the continued search of adulthood for people, experiences and stories that can show new paths.

Art – Censorship – Satire

Satire often stings in Lars von Trier's films, poking fun at bourgeois norms or exposing hypocrisy. Using Trier's films and attitudes as a starting point, CBS researcher and former director of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptoketet Flemming Friborg and satirist, music educator and actor Frederik Cilius discuss difficult and complex questions about today's understanding of the sins of the past and whether art is a special space of freedom without moral responsibility.

Trier's visual magic

What is it about Vilhelm Hammershøi's paintings that can seem so fascinating? In this lecture by Annette Rosenvold Hvidt, we will look at a number of the visual phenomena in Hammershøi's work, which have inspired film director Carl Th. Dreyer and later Lars von Trier, among others.

Sound paints pictures

When we watch films, we experience images and sound as a whole. Music, voices, silence and sound effects help to create atmosphere, emphasize emotions and give scenes their special character. This is especially true in Lars von Trier's films, where sound plays a central role in the narrative.

Live Pictures

Von Trier's painterly images constitute an aesthetic excess that complicates and nuances the story told, which is always built around simple contradictions. It is by virtue of this aesthetic excess that the films transcend the transgressive provocation from which they seem to spring, and become the great art that they are.
