NATURE ENCOUNTERS

8 October 2015 – 3 April 2016

The exhibition is based on a series of spectacular nature depictions that form a special part of JF Willumsen's artistic production. The exhibition shows these works together with selected works by 11 Danish contemporary artists – Astrid Kruse JensenDark MattersDitte Knus TønnesenEbbe Stub Wittrup, Eske Kath, Eva Koch, Jacob Kirkegaard, John KoernerNikolaj HowaltOlafur Eliasson og Number R – who have all, in their own way, processed and interpreted nature in parts of their art.

Through an expanded dialogue with contemporary art, the exhibition unfolds and puts into perspective Willumsen's fascination with and fear of harsh nature, and especially his preoccupation with the power of mountains as catalysts for mental journeys into the nooks and crannies of the mind.

The selected contemporary artists interpret nature from different angles, which include the systematically observing and recording, the philosophically and existentially searching, as well as the constructed and culturally conditioned. Their works open up new layers and narratives, where work process, form, content and perception are part of a mutual exchange across time and place.
